Privacy notice
Who we are. This website is operated by Spectacled Bear AI Ltd, a company registered in England & Wales (Company No. 17354634), registered office 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom. In this notice, "we", "us" and "our" refer to Spectacled Bear AI Ltd; "you" refers to the visitor.
The short version. We do not use analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies on this website. The only third‑party service that may set cookies is the Substack subscribe form — and that only loads if you actively choose to load it. If you email us, we hold your message and email address so we can reply to you and keep a record of the correspondence.
What personal data we collect
Correspondence. When you email chris@spectacledbear.ai or use the contact link on this site, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and the content of your message.
Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard technical information (IP address, browser type, request URL, timestamp) for security, abuse prevention and operational purposes. This information is retained for a limited period by the host and is not combined by us with other data to identify individual visitors.
Substack subscribe form. If you click "Load subscribe form" on our home page and subsequently submit your email to Substack, that submission is made directly to Substack. Their processing is governed by Substack's own privacy policy. We do not receive the email address unless we choose to view our subscriber list within Substack; if we do, we handle it in accordance with this notice.
How we use it
We use the information above to (i) reply to your enquiry and manage any resulting engagement; (ii) send you our Substack notes if you have subscribed via Substack; (iii) operate and secure this website; and (iv) meet any legal or regulatory obligations that apply to us.
Lawful bases (UK GDPR Article 6)
We rely on the following lawful bases: consent (for Substack subscriptions you opt into); legitimate interests (for responding to enquiries, and for hosting and securing the website); and legal obligation (for records we are required to keep).
How long we keep it
Correspondence: for the duration of any engagement and for a reasonable period afterwards for record‑keeping and legal purposes, typically up to seven years. Server logs: for the retention period set by the hosting provider (usually 30–90 days). Substack subscribers: for as long as you remain subscribed via Substack.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers necessary to run the business (currently: our email provider for correspondence; our website host; Substack for the subscription service). We may disclose personal data if required to do so by law.
International transfers
Some service providers (including Substack) are based outside the UK. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK we rely on the safeguards provided in UK data protection law (including the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or approved adequacy decisions).
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection in relation to your personal data, and the right to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email chris@spectacledbear.ai. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) if you consider your data has been mishandled.
Cookies
This website does not set analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies of its own. It uses only cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to function (there are none at time of writing) and, if you actively load the Substack subscribe form, cookies set by substack.com. You can prevent Substack cookies simply by not loading the form and opening the Substack in a new tab instead. Your browser also lets you block or delete cookies from any domain at any time.
Google Fonts CSS is loaded from fonts.googleapis.com; Google reports it does not set cookies for CSS requests. If you would prefer we self‑host the fonts, tell us.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. The "effective" date at the top will change to reflect the latest version.
